The institute of Forensic Studies, was set up with the aim of being a consultant to the Ministry for Justice and Home Affairs as well as to provide education for criminal justice personnel and conduct research in criminal justice field.  Due to these aims a close collaboration was developed between the institute and various criminal justice agencies such as the prison and the probation services.  The institute has two full-time criminologists and various part-time researchers/lecturers who work in the criminal justice field, some of who hold posts in international fora such as Eurojust.  It teaches probation officers, police officers and also offers a BA in criminology.  Researches currently going on include one on domestic violence and another one of rape.  Previous researches included the police, prison and probation
